What is it and how does it affect us?
Oxidative stress is the imbalance between the levels of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. Due to the unequal number of electrons and oxygen molecules in the composition, free radicals enter into many chemical reactions called oxidation. These reactions may or may not be beneficial to our bodies. On the other hand, antioxidants are friends of our body because they can donate the much-needed electrons to free radicals and stabilize them and make them less reactive.
The adverse effects of oxidative stress occur when the number of free radicals exceeds that of antioxidants. Only then do they begin to cause extensive damage to cells, proteins, and DNA. Over time, these disorders can lead to diabetes, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, heart or neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, and in extreme cases, cancer.
One of the most visible effects of oxidative stress is observed on the skin, contributing to the process of premature aging and skin aging, loss of elasticity, tone, and luminosity of the skin.
What are the risk factors for an increased level of free radicals?
Everyone produces a level of internal free radicals during the various inflammatory processes in the body. This activity is regular and part of our body’s natural defense.
Harmful free radicals are those external to the environment to which we are exposed every day, such as pollution, pesticides, radiation, cigarette smoke, ozone, etc. A diet rich in sugar, fat, and alcohol can contribute to the production of free radicals.
How do we protect ourselves?
It is almost impossible to avoid total exposure to free radicals in our environment, so the best measures are related to food and physical lifestyle. Along with a diet rich in vegetables and fruits, exercise, and rest for at least 6-8 hours a night, hydrogenated water is an equally strong ally, but not as well known.
